The Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA) today engaged the Chevron-Sangotedo Private Sector Participation (PSP) Operator on the proposed review of the monthly service rate for domestic waste collection and disposal across estates and communities within the cluster.
The engagement, which brought together LERSA representatives, estate representatives and the PSP operators, focused on the factors driving the proposed rate adjustment, including rising operational expenses, extended dumpsite turnaround time and the need to ensure the sustainability of waste collection services.
Speaking during the meeting, the President of LERSA, Alhaji Chief Sulyman Bello, said the engagement was important to ensure a balance between the operational realities of the PSP operator and the expectations of residents.
He emphasised the need for constructive dialogue and a transparent review process that would protect the interests of both service providers and residents.
Also speaking, Mrs Ronke Akinsete, Chairman of the LERSA Environment Committee, stressed the importance of compliance with the Service Level Agreement (SLA) provided by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). She noted that the terms and service standards established by the regulator should remain central to any discussion on a review of the waste collection rate.
Representatives of various estates participating in the meeting raised concerns regarding the proposed adjustment and the overall quality and consistency of waste management services within the cluster.
Among the key issues raised were:
* Uniformity of rates and arrangements among PSP operators serving estates within the same cluster.
* Improved service delivery commensurate with any proposed increase in the monthly service rate.
* Greater adherence to agreed service standards and obligations under the applicable SLA.
* The need for greater engagement with residents and estate representatives before any final adjustment is implemented.
In his closing remarks, Alhaji Chief Sulyman Bello reiterated LERSA's willingness to listen, engage and work collaboratively with both the PSP operator and residents to arrive at a sustainable solution.
He, however, stated that no final decision should be made on the proposed new rate until there has been a proper quorum and a comprehensive review of the applicable Service Level Agreement by all PSP operators serving the relevant cluster.
He further noted that LERSA would continue to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders with the objective of achieving a waste management arrangement that guarantees quality service delivery, fairness, transparency and sustainability.
The meeting forms part of LERSA's ongoing stakeholder engagement efforts aimed at addressing issues affecting residents and estates across the Lekki-Epe corridor.
